About Us

The Gurdjieff Foundation of New York is home to a diverse community of people with  the common purpose of living a more conscious and balanced life through self-study. We share this aim with affiliated groups around the world.

We are a non-profit, volunteer organization

of individuals seeking to find meaning through putting into practice the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff.

Member meetings and activities are organized to deepen each person’s search in the midst of everyday life while supported by a community of fellow seekers.

The Foundation remains committed to ensuring that the forms of this living teaching  continue to evolve to serve future generations while protecting its integrity and purpose.

Gurdjieff made his first visit to America

in 1924 with forty of his followers including dancers and musicians. His visit attracted attention with performances of sacred dances and exercises.  Over the next twenty five years, Gurdjieff returned to America eight more times.  By his death in 1949, he had established thriving groups in New York and other U.S. cities.

Gurdjieff entrusted the future

of his teaching to Jeanne de Salzmann.  Under her guidance, the New York groups came together to form the Gurdjieff Foundation of New York. Throughout its existence, the Foundation and its members have attracted thousands of individuals searching for meaning in their lives.

Gurdjieff in America

To commemorate the first visit of G. I. Gurdjieff to New York in 1924, the Gurdjieff Foundation of New York presents a new documentary film, “Gurdjieff in America as Recollected by his Pupils".

North American Groups

Since its inception, the GFNY has provided support to individuals and groups wishing to bring the Gurdjieff teaching into their lives.  Many have gone on to establish local centers across North America.
